• Get on the mailing list to receive the City Council agenda in the mail by calling the city clerk at 717-255-3060.

• Participate in City Council meetings generally held the first four Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. in City Council chambers off the atrium of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center, 10 North Second Street, across from the Hilton Hotel. Tell your City Council members you want to close the incinerator.

• Learn about Environmental Justice issues around the incinerator.

• Talk to your neighbors about why you want the incinerator to stay closed.

• Sponsor a Talking Trash discussion in your home or at your community group meeting. To arrange a speaker, call 233-6842.

• Distribute brochures and flyers in your neighborhood. To get literature, call 233-6842.

• Contact the members of Harrisburg School District's Board of Control and ask them to start teaching our children about recycling, composting and caring for the earth at each grade level. The Board of Control meets at 6:30 p.m.on the third Monday of the month at the Administration Building, 1201 North Sixth Street. • Start recycling in your household. See how much you can reduce your household trash by using the drop off areas available to the public in addition to the curbside pickup.
  • Take your corrugated cardboard, newspaper, telephone books, recyclable cans, plastic containers, and glass to the Haul-All site at the Uptown Plaza, 7th & Division Streets. The BIG BLUE containers are located in the parking lot along 7th St., behind Blockbuster Video.

  • Telephone Books can be dropped off at the H&R Block parking lot of the Harrisburg East Mall, where JC Penney used to be.

  • Other recyclable items can be dropped off in the bins at the Harrisburg Incinerator. Just turn up the hill from Cameron Street at the signs

  • When you are at a public event outside, use the recycling bins you see.

  • Hazardous household chemicals can be disposed of through the county. The county will pay to have someone pick up your items and dispose of them safely. For more information, check out their website at: www.dauphininc.org

Schedule

City Council meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in Legislative Sessions in which they can vote on items for final passage. These sessions are generally taped to be aired on the local access channel, which I think is still channel 8 in Harrisburg. Those meetings begin at 6 p.m. with a Pre-legislative Caucus beginning at 5:30 in the room to the side of City Council Chambers.

Council also meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 6 p.m. in Non-legislative Sessions.
